What is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is a trauma-informed, evidence-based approach that helps clients understand and heal the different “parts” of themselves. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS views the mind as composed of multiple subpersonalities, each with its own emotions, beliefs, and roles. We all have parts. You might notice yourself saying something like, "Part of me wants to go on a walk but another part of me just wants to take a nap." We actually use parts language all the time without ever noticing it.

During IFS therapy, clients learn to identify and connect with their protective and vulnerable parts, reduce internal conflict, and develop a compassionate relationship with themselves. This method is particularly effective for individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD and complex PTSD (CPTSD).

At Alabama Counseling & Wellness in Birmingham, AL, our therapists use IFS therapy and parts work to help clients:

  • Understand internal conflicts and self-sabotaging behaviors

  • Heal from trauma and emotional wounds

  • Improve relationships with themselves and others

  • Increase emotional resilience and self-compassion

If you’re looking for IFS therapy in Birmingham, Alabama, our counselors can guide you through a structured, supportive process that fosters self-discovery, healing, and personal growth.

This is a great explanation for what Internal Family Systems therapy is and what it might look like in session.
